How to Draft Reality Fracture
Pick-Two at four players, ordinary draft at eight, and how echoed pairs change signals.
Reality Fracture Limited is built around two facts: Play Boosters contain an echoed pair, and Wizards is pushing Pick-Two as a four-player format through Draft Night and through Magic Presents: Reality Echoes later in the season. You can still draft the set eight-handed the usual way. You should know both procedures before you buy a box.
If you have never drafted, read getting started first. If your next event is Sealed, use prerelease instead of this page.
Standard eight-player draft
Each player opens three Play Boosters. For each pack you pick one card, pass the rest, and repeat until the pack is empty. Packs two and three reverse pass direction. You then build a 40-card deck, usually 17 lands, from the cards you drafted plus basic lands.
The echoed-pair slot changes the table talk even when nobody speaks. When a pack contains Chandra, Torch of Defiance and Chandra, Chill of Compliance together, taking “the pair” is two cards of opportunity in one pick only in Pick-Two. In normal draft you take one half and pass the other. That passed half is a loud signal: the player to your left knows you did not take both colors. Treat legend halves like gold uncommons when you read the wheel.
Pick-Two and Draft Night
Draft Night is a boxed four-player product: 12 Play Boosters, 1 Collector Booster, 90 non-foil basic lands, 10 double-sided tokens, and a draft insert. MSRP is $89.99. Setup is three Play Boosters per player. Open a pack, pick two cards, pass the rest. Repeat. Build 40. The Collector Booster is a prize, not a fourth pack for the winner’s deck.
Pick-Two is faster and greedier than eight-player draft. Taking both halves of an echoed pair in one pick is legal and often correct if you want that legend’s colors. Taking two on-color commons over a pair you will never cast is also correct. The mistake is treating every pair as a mandate.
Magic Presents: Reality Echoes (October 16–November 5) is the in-store Pick-Two event that centers the pair sheet. If Draft Night is your kitchen-table rehearsal, Reality Echoes is the store version with a set-symbol pin for winners. Dates sit on the release calendar.
What to look for while picking
Hexhaven’s five allied pairs are the lanes:
- WU Fatehold: scry, surveil, Prepared enterers, tempo spells
- UB Theorix: card selection, paradox, mill, control Prepared
- BR Stingerquill: cheap Prepared, burn, discard, aggressive creatures
- RG Konstrari: constructs, tokens, midrange tramplers
- GW Vigorbloom: lifegain, go-wide, Prepared value
Limited archetypes expands each lane with spoiled examples. During a draft, you only need the lane names so you can say “I am in Stingerquill” instead of “I have some black and some red.”
Prepared cards are creatures with a spell face. They enter prepared, or they prepare on upkeep, or they prepare after a condition such as three deaths (Bloodline Recollector). While prepared, you may cast a copy of the spell, which unprepares the creature. The body stays. That is a Limited engine, not flavor text. First-pick Prepared uncommons highly when your colors already want the spell — Peer Review on a scry deck, Vicious Verse on an aggro deck, Seed Suture on a grind deck.
Removal still beats a cute engine if the engine costs five. Do not pass clean kill spells because you are “forcing Hexhaven.”
Building after the draft
Curve first, pair second. A 40-card deck wants a spread of two-drops and three-drops even if your mythic is a six-mana construct. Echoed-pair planeswalkers can justify a splash if you drafted the fixing; they do not justify a splash on hope.
Sideboard the half of a pair you did not build around. The passed-back Chandra you took “because it was free” is a sideboard card against control, not an automatic main-deck slot.
Lands: 17 default. 16 if your curve is very cheap and you have two-color density. 18 only if you are truly three colors with expensive payoffs.
Draft Night logistics
You do not need eight friends. You need four, a table, and sleeves. The insert walks setup. Use the included lands; do not raid a Battle for Zendikar box unless you enjoy mismatched backs. The Collector Booster can be cracked by the winner, split, or saved — agree before pack one.
If four people is still too many, wait for Arena Premier Draft on September 29. The Arena guide covers queues. Paper Draft Night remains the best way to learn Pick-Two before Reality Echoes.
For SKU math — box versus Draft Night versus prerelease — use the buyer guide. For what the pair slot looks like in the wrapper, stay on echoed pairs. Draft is the format where that slot is a conversation with three other seats, not a solitary Sealed surprise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is Draft Night required to draft Reality Fracture?
No. Any three Play Boosters per player work for eight-player draft. Draft Night is the official four-player Pick-Two kit.
Do I pick both cards of an echoed pair?
In Pick-Two you can take both in one pick. In normal draft you take one card and pass the other half as a signal.
What is Reality Echoes?
A later-season store Pick-Two event (October 16–November 5) built around echoed pairs. See release dates.
How many lands should I run?
Seventeen is the default 40-card number. Cut to 16 only with a cheap two-color curve.
