Reality Fracture Mechanics

Reality Fracture is still an upcoming Standard set. The public file is small — about 21 cards on Scryfall as of late August 2026 — but the design promises are already loud. This page is the mechanics desk: keywords you can play today, keywords you can only plan around, and the one token that made every Vintage player sit up. For school names and campus fiction, stay on Hexhaven. For the Rosewater name list, use teasers. For who the cards depict, use the planeswalkers hub.

Prepared — the engine you can already draft

Prepared returned from Secrets of Strixhaven. A Prepared card has a creature face and a spell face. While the creature is prepared, you may cast a copy of its spell; doing so unprepares it. The body stays. You are not flashing a double-faced card into exile. You are holding a stored spell on a permanent until you spend it.

Spoiled cards prepare in three ways:

• Enter prepared: Prudent Fateseer // Peer Review, Vigorbloom Vanguard // Seed Suture.
• Prepare at the beginning of your upkeep if they are not prepared: Paradox Shaper // Omit Variables, Stingerquill Voxmancer // Vicious Verse, Woodwork Prodigy // Soul Tether.
• Prepare after a board condition: Bloodline Recollector becomes prepared at each end step if three or more creatures died this turn, then lets you fire Ancestral Craving — a one-mana draw-three that costs life.

Play pattern in Limited: curve the body, spend the spell when the extra effect actually wins a race or a two-for-one, then attack with the leftover creature. Do not count the spell as a second card in your forty. You still have to pay it. Draft the school whose prepare trigger you can actually turn on; Fatehold wants scry and surveil, Stingerquill wants bodies in the bin, Konstrari wants constructs on the table.

Exhaust — once per card, on purpose

Exhaust is the new keyword that spoiled on Liliana the Repentant. Reminder text on that card: activate each exhaust ability only once. The black Liliana mills you when another creature or planeswalker you control enters, then her Exhaust ability returns a creature or planeswalker from the graveyard and puts a +1/+1 counter on her. Activate only as a sorcery.

That is the entire public Exhaust sample. Do not invent a cycle. Do not assume every school gets one. Treat Exhaust as a once-per-game loyalty-shaped ability glued to a creature, and wait for the spoiler tracker before you build a deck that needs three Exhaust cards to function. Lotus token — Black Lotus as a token, not as a card

Mark Rosewater’s August 2026 teaser states, word for word, that a card in the set creates a colorless artifact token named Lotus with “tap, Sacrifice this token: Add three mana of any one color.” Polygon covered the same line: Magic’s most expensive banned card is coming back, but as a token, not as a legal Black Lotus reprint.

What that means for formats:

• The token is not the Reserved List card. You cannot put Black Lotus in Standard because of this teaser.
• Three mana of any one color is still a storm-shaped burst. Constructed players will hunt the parent card on debut day (September 8).
• Limited players should ask how often the parent shows up at common or uncommon. A rare that makes one Lotus is a bomb. A common that makes one Lotus is a format.
• Vintage and Commander tables will argue about token copies versus the original. That argument is not this wiki’s job; format legality only tracks FRA versus FRC versus Special Guests.

Until the parent card has a name and a rarity, do not preorder a box because “Lotus is in the set.” Preorder because you want Play Boosters or Multiverse Reforged. The buyer guide is still the SKU page.

Wish, duals, hosers, and the rest of the teaser sheet

Rosewater also promised, as design facts rather than spoiled cards:

• A new wish — a card that can put a card from outside the game into your hand. In paper, that is sideboard. On Arena, that is a defined companion zone; do not assume paper wish rules map 1:1 until the digital client ships on September 29. See Arena.
• A new restriction for whether a cycle of dual lands enters tapped. Allied-color duals would match Hexhaven’s WU / UB / BR / RG / GW skeleton. The restriction is the unknown — life total, legendary, prepared, scry this turn, something else. Draft as if you have five shockless duals until the tap rule is public, then rebuild.
• A cycle of color hosers for ally colors. That is unusual; hosers usually hate enemies. Fatehold might hate Stingerquill’s pair, or each school might hate its neighbor. Wait for the cycle before you splash greedily.
• An instant with “A deck can have any number of cards named CARDNAME.” Relentless Rats / Dragon’s Approach energy. Limited: ignore unless you open several. Constructed: bookmark the name on debut day.
• A mechanic that creates a token type no other mechanic has ever created. Cadet and Heartwood tokens already appeared in coverage; one of those names may be the new type, or the Lotus token may be the joke, or a third type is still hidden.
• Colorwashed spells akin to a Planar Chaos bonus sheet, a prepared red version of a popular blue instant, Hydra / Kraken / Phoenix in a color they have never used, and a creature with 2/W2/U2/B2/R2/G in its cost.

Those last items belong on the teaser tracker until they have collector numbers. This page only needs you to know they exist so you do not draft Hexhaven as a five-archetype puzzle with no duals and no interaction.

Echoed pairs are a pack mechanic, not a keyword

Every Play and Collector Booster contains a linked Multiverse / Echoverse duo. That is a collation rule, not reminder text on a card. It changes first-pick signals and collector math. It does not stack with Prepared. Read echoed pairs before you open a prerelease kit.

How to use this page at the table

1. Memorize Prepared and the three trigger styles. That is the Limited format.
2. Remember Exhaust is once. Do not sequence it like a planeswalker plus you can fire every turn.
3. Remember Lotus is a token. Do not write “Black Lotus legal in Standard” on a decklist.
4. Bookmark duals, wish, and the any-number instant for September 8.
5. Grade spoiled cards on the early list only after you know which mechanic they actually use.

If a streamer grades a card S-tier because “the Lotus payoff is coming,” ask whether the parent is spoiled. If it is not, the grade is a wish. This wiki will move lines from teasers to this mechanics page when Scryfall has a name, a rarity, and oracle text — not before.
