Echoed Pairs in Reality Fracture

Echoed pairs are the pack mechanic people will mention first. They are not a keyword on the card. They are a slot. Wizards prints two cards that depict the same character (with rare exceptions) living two lives: one in the Multiverse you have been playing, one in Jace’s Echoverse. Every Reality Fracture Play Booster and Collector Booster contains that pair.

What the Play Booster actually contains

A Play Booster lists 14 cards plus a token. Inside that 14:

• 5–6 commons
• 1 uncommon
• 1 common or uncommon
• 3 echoed-pair cards, which include both members of one pair
• 1 rare or mythic
• 1 traditional foil
• 1 land

The three-card pair slot is why people say “you always open the pair.” You do. You also open a third card from that sheet. The pair is not your only rare; you still have a normal rare/mythic slot.

Collector Boosters repeat the idea in foil: three traditional-foil uncommon echoed-pair cards, again including a complete pair, plus extra Booster Fun rares.

Pairs that are already public

• Chandra, Torch of Defiance (red mythic reprint/reappearance) and Chandra, Chill of Compliance (blue mythic). Fire versus ice. Full character page: Chandra.
• Garruk, Curse Breaker (green) and Garruk, Veiled Butcher (black).
• Ajani Resolute (white, unusually cheap) and Ajani Unrelenting (red).
• Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance (black skeleton rogue) and Titanbones, Towering Heart (green skeleton druid).
• Liliana the Faultless (white cleric, one mana) and Liliana the Repentant (black warlock). These are legendary creatures, not planeswalkers.

Wizards has said each pair (with one exception) shows the same character. The exception has not been the marketing focus; do not invent it. More pairs show up as the spoiler tracker grows after September 8.

Borderless echoed pairs exist as 15 art diptychs (30 cards): the two frames combine into one battle scene. Chandra’s fire crashing into her ice counterpart is the published example. Non-foil and traditional foil borderless versions can appear in Play and Collector Boosters.

How pairs change Limited

In Sealed, the pair is extra legends in a six-pack pool. That is a gift if they match your two colors and a trap if you splash a third color “because Chandra.” Prerelease walks the build discipline.

In eight-player draft you take one half and pass the other. Passing Chill of Compliance while taking Torch of Defiance tells the table you are red, not blue. In Pick-Two you can take both halves in a single pick, which is the entire reason Draft Night and Reality Echoes exist. See how to draft.

Do not first-pick a pair half you cannot cast over a clean removal spell in your open colors. The pair is a value engine, not a god pack by default.

How pairs change collecting

You do not need two boxes to complete Chandra. You need the packs to hit her pair slot. Completionists still chase:

• Regular frame pair
• Borderless diptych pair
• Traditional foil of each
• Japan Showcase treatments (Collector only; Japanese in Japanese Collector Boosters, English otherwise)
• Shattered mirror and braintwister series cards, which are related Booster Fun but not the pair slot itself

Serialized Bloodline Recollector is a different chase: 500 English copies in Collector Boosters of any language. It is a Prepared mythic, not an echoed pair. Products and the buyer guide separate those SKUs.

Related treatments people mix up

Shattered mirror cards (13 of them) show a famous Magic card colliding with an Echoverse rewrite on the same frame, with optional facet foil in Collectors. Braintwister series (23 cards) is borderless “unreality” art, including The Theorist. Japan Showcase is ten hobby-shop frames. Secret Lair Bundle promos are ten more visions. None of those replace the guaranteed pair slot; they sit beside it.

When someone says “I opened a pair,” they mean the slot. When they say “I opened a shattered Chandra,” they mean a treatment. Keep the language straight and the early rankings stay useful.

For character context on the other legends, use the planeswalkers roundup. For school-colored uncommons that are not pairs, stay on Hexhaven. The pair slot is the thing every pack shares; everything else is variance on top.
