How to Play Prerelease

Prerelease is the first legal chance to play Reality Fracture with paper cards. For this set the window is September 25 through October 1, 2026, and it is an in-store event. Wizards retired At-Home Prerelease kits globally beginning with Reality Fracture, so if your plan was “buy a box, sleeve it on the couch, and call it prerelease,” that product path is gone. Book a WPN store. The stores page points at the official locator.

If you are still choosing between Sealed and Draft, read this page first, then how to draft. If you have not learned the set hook, skim echoed pairs so the extra legends in your pool do not surprise you.

What is in the Prerelease Pack

Each Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack contains:

  • Six Play Boosters
  • One traditional foil promo card (rare or mythic)
  • One deck box
  • One Spindown die

You build a 40-card Sealed deck from those boosters plus basic lands the store provides. The foil promo is part of your pool. You may play it. You may sleeve it and leave it in the sideboard. You may not trade it mid-event.

Play Boosters themselves already contain an echoed pair slot: three cards from the pair sheet that include both halves of one pair. That means a six-pack Sealed pool is denser with legends than a typical Standard Sealed pool. Plan your mana with that in mind instead of forcing five colors because you opened pretty names.

Two rule changes to know before you sit down

At-Home kits are retired in every region. Stores can still sell product during prerelease week under WPN early-sales policy, but the event itself is on site.

Two-Headed Giant Prerelease uses an updated configuration: the team receives one Prerelease Pack plus two extra Play Boosters, not two full Prerelease Packs. If your store still advertises the old 2HG kit math, ask before you pay.

How to build the Sealed deck

Sort by color, then by Hexhaven pair. The five schools are the Limited skeleton:

  • Fatehold: white-blue scry, surveil, future-looking Prepared spells
  • Theorix: blue-black paradox, portals, mill-adjacent math
  • Stingerquill: black-red words, burn, aggressive Prepared
  • Konstrari: red-green constructs and tethers
  • Vigorbloom: green-white graft, lifegain, go-wide bodies

Those identities are explained with examples on Hexhaven and limited archetypes. For prerelease night you only need the sorting trick: if your white and blue cards want to scry and prepare, you are in Fatehold even if you never learned the school name.

Count playable creatures before you lock colors. Prepared cards are creatures that can also spit a spell; they look like “one card, two jobs,” which is strong in Sealed if you can pay the spell. They are traps if your curve is all four-drops.

Echoed-pair planeswalkers are splashable only if the rest of the pool supports the extra color. Chandra, Chill of Compliance is blue; Chandra, Torch of Defiance is red. Opening the pair does not obligate a blue-red deck. Play the half that matches your two main colors and treat the other half as a sideboard bomb or a splash with duals you actually have.

Lands: 17 is still the Sealed default. If your pair splash is real, 16 plus two duals can work. If you are three colors because you panicked, cut the third color before you cut spells.

Event flow

Stores schedule unlimited prerelease events inside the week. Typical structure is three or four Swiss rounds, 40 minutes, prize support at the store’s discretion. Promo cards for other seasonal events (Crystal Ball, Tragic Trajectory) are not prerelease participation prizes; those belong to Commander Party and Standard Showdown later. Do not expect them in the kit.

Bring sleeves, a deck box if you dislike the included one, and basic lands only if the store asks you to. Leave proxies and unmarked tokens at home. Tokens from boosters are legal.

What prerelease is for (and not for)

It is for learning the Limited environment before Friday Night Magic and before Arena ranked sealed, which opens September 29 — see Arena. It is not the place to complete a master set. Collector Boosters and the serialized Bloodline Recollector are a different purchase, covered in the buyer guide.

If you enjoy the Sealed pool, the next step is either a Play Booster box for draft or Draft Night for a four-player table. If you bounced off the mechanic density, read echoed pairs after the event; a lot of “this pack felt swingy” reports in past pair-sheet sets were just players ignoring the extra legends.

Book the ticket, open six packs, stay in two colors unless the pool is truly greedy, and write down which Hexhaven pair felt real. That note is the entire scouting report you need for week one.
